There are all sorts of natural methods in circulation claiming to remove lice and nits without chemicals or combing, but when you look at how each one actually works (or doesn't), none of them hold up as a genuine substitute for physical removal.

The suffocation method: mayonnaise, oil, and why it doesn't work

One of the most common natural approaches is the suffocation method, applying mayonnaise or oil to the scalp in an attempt to smother the lice and kill them. The problem is in the biology. Lice breathe through seven small breathing holes, all of which would need to be completely and continuously covered for over two hours to have any real effect. In practice, that rarely happens. When a louse is submerged in water or coated in a thick product like mayonnaise, a small pocket of air often gets trapped against its body, acting like a tiny air bubble and letting it keep breathing regardless.

The suffocation method has never been shown to reliably kill all the lice present, and it does nothing at all to the nits, since eggs don't breathe the way lice do. On top of that, you're left with the genuinely unpleasant job of washing a thick, greasy product back out of the hair afterwards. A number of commercial products on the market today make similar suffocation claims, and the evidence behind most of them is just as thin.

Enzyme and "egg-loosening" products: what the research actually shows

Another popular claim is that certain enzyme-based products can loosen the cement-like glue holding a nit to the hair shaft, making it easier to slide off. It's an appealing idea, but a peer-reviewed study published in the journal Medical and Veterinary Entomology tested this directly. Researchers measured the force required to dislodge nits treated with several leading "egg-loosening" products and found none of them performed any better than plain water or ordinary hair conditioner. Hair straighteners: why this method can't work properly (and can be dangerous)

Using a hair straightener to try to kill lice and eggs directly is another commonly suggested method, and it comes with real problems. Live lice on the scalp move quickly through dry hair, meaning they can simply move out of the section you're working on before the straightener ever reaches them. Nits are a bigger issue: they're laid extremely close to the scalp, typically within 2 to 5 millimetres, and running a hot straightener that close to the scalp risks a genuine burn.

People sometimes report hearing eggs "pop" during this process and take it as a sign the method is working. In reality, that sound is simply the empty casing left behind after a louse has already hatched, not a live egg being destroyed.

"Natural" prevention and treatment products: what real experience shows

There's no shortage of natural head lice products on the market claiming to kill or repel lice without harsh chemicals, many built around tea tree oil or other essential oils marketed as natural repellents.
